Democratic Due process
Its not so much same-sex marriage that enrages them: Most Americans oppose an anti-same-sex amendment to the U.S. Constitution...Rather, what provokes people is moral arrogance expressed in disdain for democratic due process. - George Will, Washington Post
This is an excellent point about the action taken by San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom. It wasn't so much that gays were getting married. He was breaking the law, and he was grandstanding while he was doing it. His utter contempt for state law is what scared many people across the country. Gavin's opinion that the law baning same-sex marriage in California was unconstitutional is for a judge to make, not a mayor.

can you express further how he broke the law?
California State law indicates it is unlawful for any municipality, whom are responsible for issuing marriage licenses, to issue them to couples of the same sex. Gavin Newsom ordered the clerks of San Francisco to issue licenses to same-sex couples.
